The Almost Cute Moment in Life, Pt. 1 (Korean: 화양연화 pt.1 ; Hanja: 花樣年華 pt.ane ; RR: Hwayangyeonhwa pt.1 ) is the tertiary extended play by South Korean boy band BTS. The anthology was released on April 29, 2015 past Big Hit Entertainment.[3] It is available in two versions and contains ix tracks, with "I Need U" as the lead unmarried and "Dope (쩔어)" every bit a promoted follow-upward unmarried.

Groundwork and release [edit]

Shifting their sound and image from solely aggressive, masculine hip hop to more diverse styles,[4] BTS wanted to express the beauty and anxiousness of "youth" and settled on the championship of "花樣年華" (Korean: 화양연화; RR: Hwayangyeonhwa), loosely interpreted to ascertain "youth" as "the most beautiful moment in life."[v] On April 6, 2015, BTS announced their comeback date for April 29, and revealed that all members participated in writing songs for the anthology.[6] On April 17, an animated comeback trailer[7] was uploaded on Large Hit Entertainment'due south official YouTube channel, which featured the anthology's intro track performed by Suga.[eight] On April xix, Big Hit Amusement announced the title of the anthology, and the beginning set up of member concept photos[9] was posted on their official Twitter account. Along with the reveal of the second set of concept photos,[10] it was stated that two dissimilar comprehend design versions of the album would be released, Pink and White. The anthology would also include a 120-folio photobook and a random photograph card.[11] Big Hit Entertainment released the first music video teaser for the anthology's lead unmarried "I Need U" on April 23.[12] On April 26, the album's track list was revealed, and an anthology preview was uploaded on Big Hit Amusement's YouTube channel.[13] Two of the album'south tracks, "Boyz with Fun" and "Converse High," had previously been previewed at the 2015 BTS Live Trilogy Episode I: BTS Begins concert held in Seoul on March 29.[xiv]

On June xiv, BTS posted concept photos[15] [16] for the follow-upwards promotion track "Dope (쩔어)" through their official Facebook page, captioned with the opening line of the song: "Welcome, first time with BTS?"

Music videos [edit]

The music video for "I Demand U" was released on April 30, 2015.[17] The video was revealed to have been edited to lower the nineteen+ rating down to a 15+ rating, as it advisedly portrays each band members' stories representing troubled youth.[18] On May 10, the uncut, original 19+ version of the music video was released, which includes nigh two minutes of extended scenes and contains darker themes and more graphic imagery than the previous video.[19] Both versions of the "I Need U" music videos were produced and directed past Lumpens.[20]

On June 24, Big Hit Entertainment released the music video for "Dope (쩔어)" on YouTube.[21] It features each of the members dressed upward to stand for various occupations, such as a police officer or office worker, while dancing fast-paced choreography.[22] The dance was choreographed by Keone Madrid, and the music video was produced and directed by GDW.[23]

Promotions [edit]

On April 29, 2015, prior to the release of the "I Demand U" music video at midnight, BTS broadcast a live comeback special [24] called "I NEED U, BTS ON AIR" through Naver Starcast.[25] On April 30, BTS held their first comeback stage performance on Mnet'south M Countdown.[26] Ii tracks from the anthology, "Boyz with Fun" and "Converse High", were deemed unfit for broadcast by KBS due to lyrics containing swears and make names, such every bit Converse, Chanel, and Alexander McQueen.[27] The latter track was also accounted unfit for broadcast past MBC.[28] Nonetheless, the group went on to successfully promote beyond multiple channels and various programs, including on KBS, MBC, SBS, and Arirang TV.[29] BTS wrapped up promotions for "I Need U" with the terminal performance held on the May 31 broadcast of SBS Inkigayo.

Commercial performance [edit]

Immediately after the release of the album, "I Need U" became the top trending search term on Korean portal sites and ranked number one on diverse real-time music charts, including Soribada, Genie, and Daum Music. The song also managed to crack the top x on Melon, Bugs, and Naver Music's existent-fourth dimension music charts.[36] The music video for "I Need U" reached one meg views in 16 hours, while the "Dope (쩔어)" music video garnered ane meg views in less than 15 hours[37]—the fastest record for any BTS music video at the time. In Japan, the album debuted at number 24 on the Oricon Weekly Album Nautical chart[47] and number 45 on the Oricon Monthly Album Chart.[48] The Most Cute Moment in Life, Part one was the sixth best-selling album in South Korea in 2015 with sales over 200,000 copies.[49]

BTS charted a total of half-dozen songs on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart, with "I Need U" ranked highest at number 4, followed by "Dope" (number 11), "Hold Me Tight" (number 12), "Boyz with Fun" (number 13), "Converse High" (number fifteen), and "Outro: Love is Not Over" (number 25).[fifty] On July 11, after having completed follow-upwards promotions, "Dope" peaked at number 3 on the Earth Digital Songs nautical chart.[51] The album also debuted at number two on the Billboard World Albums Chart, peaked at number six on the Billboard Top Heatseekers Chart, and entered the Billboard Contained Albums Chart for the first fourth dimension at number 20, all of which were the highest for any BTS album at the fourth dimension.[fifty] The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 was named by Fuse every bit i of the "27 Best Albums of 2015 Then Far", coming in at 24,[52] with BTS existence the only Korean artist to be recognized on the list.
